The 1980s were known for classic fantasy movies, but there were a few that stand out in my mind. The first one is one that introduced me to Harrison Ford not being Han Solo. He was the lead role in Blade Runner. This film was directed by Ridley Scott, who had just made Alien three years prior. It was released in 1982. Harrison Ford starred at Rick Deckard, a blade runner that is forced to come back to the police force when six replicas have escaped from another colony and are on their way to Earth. This film was set in Los Angeles in 2019 and also stars Sean Young, Edward James Olmos, and Rutger Hauer.
Another classic fantasy film from the 1980s stars a bodybuilder who is now the governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger. The one and only Terminator. This film was directed by James Cameron, who is now directing the television series based from the Terminator called "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The original Terminator was released in 1985 and it was about a computer called Skynet who is fighting a human resistance who built it and almost wiped out the rest of humanity. An unstoppable cyborg is sent from the future to kill the leader of the resistance, Sarah Connor, and prevent her birth. The human resistance send Kyle Reese to protect her, but can he do it or will the Terminator terminate the human race. One of the best lines from a movie came from this one when Arnold's character uttered..."I'll be back." This movie also starred Michael Biehn and Linda Hamilton.
Another fantasy film which was like the Terminator was released three years later called Robocop. Released in 1988, this starred Peter Weller, who was critically injured by a group called Omni Consomer Products (OCP) and is used as a subject to create Robocop. His memory was erased and Robocop is able to cut down crime, one case at a time, until he is involved in the same situation that harmed him the first time. Will Robocop be able to overcome his dismal memories of the situation and exact revenge? Will he find out who he really is before it is too late? Robocop also stars Nancy Alle, Dan O'Herlihy and Ronny Cox.
These are just a couple of fantasy films in the 1980s, but these are the three that I like the most from the 1980s.
