anyone chewing on a cigar and sucking down bourbon isn't really trying to convey that he is. I highly recommend Tater Salad's CD "Drunk in Public".

Buy it. Play it. Just not in a bar in NYC.

8. Wanda Sykes

I love Wanda Sykes. She's brash and abrasive, but she's also one of the funniest ladies working today. Definitely R rated material, such as detachable parts of the female anatomy, but her humor is smart as well as decidedly "adult". I recommend "Sick and Tired".

You'll be anything but once it's over.

9. Jeff Dunham

This ventriloquist has been successful for a long while, but I only discovered him last year thanks to his "Achmed the Dead Terrorist" routine. He's fairly family friendly, but his puppets walk the line. I think this was a stroke of genius, that he plays good cop to their bad cop in many a routine, especially his famous buddy "Walter". It's also a way to keep this dying art current and relevant in today's society. To see Achmed, find Jeff's DVD "Spark of Insanity".

10. Lewis Black

If you like political humorists, Lewis is one of the best. He scathing wit is targeted right at Washington, and he says the stuff so many of us are thinking. Only with a lot more profanity. Definitely for the adults (and possibly more for the liberal adults), punctuate your news with a little taste of the irreverent. When he says "Nothing Sacred", he means it.

Buy it. Watch it. Especially if you're overdosing on Fox News.

So that's my list. A little offbeat, sure. But hopefully it'll inspire you to check out some comedians you may not have listened to before.

Then you can become a stand-up junkie (and groupie) like me.
