How to increase traffic to your blog

Traffic is one of those things that bloggers tend to obsess about. The fact of the matter is that a blog's traffic reflects its popularity, it's impact in the blogging community, its relevance to the blog's topic and, ultimately, the potential for monetization of the blog. While there are many ways to increase traffic to your blog, the fact of the matter is that some methods of increasing traffic to your blog are more effective than others.

Here are a few methods that have proven to be effective, over time, at increasing traffic to your blog:

* Leaving comments on other blogs. One of the things that makes a blog different from another sort of web site is the interactivity element. The fact of the matter is that a blog is all about the conversation; it's about sharing ideas among people who are interested in a similar topic. By leaving comments on related blogs, you insert your blog into the topic of the other blog. Leaving a one-line comment, such as "right on" or "great article," however, is not especially effective at increasing traffic to your blog. Instead, leave comments that are thoughtful, insightful, and that contribute to the overall conversation on the topic.

* Using social media. Social media refers to bookmarking tools like Digg or StumbleUpon, or to social tools like Twitter, that allow you to promote your blog. Providing readers with a button that allows them to add your blog post to a social bookmarking site, or interacting with others on Twitter, have proven to be great methods of increasing traffic to your blog. Be careful, however, that you don't abuse these tools. Many bloggers have signed up for a service like StumbleUpon, used it to promote their blog, and wound up finding the tool useless because they only used it on their blog, instead of using it on other blogs, as well, as the tools were intended. Likewise, if all you ever do on Twitter is talk about your latest blog post, you aren't going to generate much in the way of a traffic increase.

* Paid marketing campaigns. You can advertise your blog for a fee through keyword services such as Google AdSense, or you could advertise your blog directly on a related blog. In some cases, these campaigns can be effective. For others, however, they are a bit hit-and-miss. Testing out a couple of campaigns first may be the way to go before you dump a bunch of money into a large campaign that is going to cost you a large amount of money while only mildly increasing your blog traffic.

While none of these methods is guaranteed to increase traffic to your blog, they have proven to be effective sources of traffic for others.
