The banks, befriending with beguiling offers
Beckoning with introductory programs
zero interest,bonuses of points and miles.

Sirens and flyers,
proffering three percent cash back to sooth
the wound of twenty-one percent interest.
Befriending, beguiling, beckoning
building balances until a day comes
one of reckoning when you trip over the
fine print.

When minimum balance betrays,
turning from friend into foe.
From trusted allies to Benedict Card-nold
turncoat, enemy, torpedoing the dreams
of a fiscal security, of fast cars and new homes.

First come the late payment fees,
then penalties.
As if the higher rates will somehow enable us
to pay more as the shiny new credit card
Enabled more spending.

Instead, the solutions are drastic.
Radical.
A future based firmly in the past.
A future based solely in cash.
