NFL talk: Brett Favre and retirement

Okay Brett, you have been gone for a few weeks now. We want you to know that we miss you. Not just in Green Bay, but all over The National Football League. We wonder, will there ever be a snow ball throwin', touchdown heaver like you again?

After all, nobody could take a D-linemen's best shot and jump up and pat him on the fanny like you could. No one could sprint toward the sidelines on a naked boot leg, grinnin' all the way, like you could. Certainly, no one else could fearlessly throw into triple coverage, get intercepted, and heck, do it again on the very next play! There is no way that we will ever forget that.

No, there will never be another Brett Favre. There is too much on the line now in the National Football League to have so much fun. There are contracts to renegotiate and bundles of endorsement money to be made. There are stadiums that need to be renamed for the highest bidder. And we gotta have a rule banning long hair. Gotta make 'em stuff it under their helmets. After all, that's too much like a game. We are trying to have a business here. The next thing you know they'll be wanting to leap into the stands after they score a touchdown!

Yes, we will miss you, Brett. Our only hope is that somewhere, on some sandlot, there is a coach that understands that winning isn't always the only thing. That maybe a group of nine year olds need not be dreaming of multi-million dollar sneaker deals. That the game was meant to be played for the reason that you played it-for the fun.

Don't get us wrong, Brett, we know that you got your share of the money and you had your share of the winning. But you never lost your perspective. We want to thank you for that. We watched you cry the first time you announced your retirement. We watched you smile when you changed your mind and decided to come back. But we know that this time is really it.

So we want you to know that we're grinning too. We thank you for the Most Vauluable Player performances, the Super Bowl memories, the touchdown passes, the records, and, of course, for the snowballs. We're so grateful that you gave us one more round.
