Tips for electronic music production

by Richard Leigh

Created on: April 12, 2008

For several years now I have been producing electronic music. Depending on my mood the sounds I create can vary between funky house, drum and bass, and even hip-hop. With electronic music there is such great potential, any sound you can possibly think of can be created electronically to great effect. To make the best electronic music possible it's always best to cover a vast array of genres in the sound you are creating I feel, do not merely stick to one genre of music but instead draw upon all of your influences in order to create the most interesting, original, and innovative sound possible.

In terms of software then you're going to want to own a sequencer program such as Cubase or Reason if you're a regular computer user. If you own an Apple computer however then Pro Tools and Logic Pro can be utilized in order to create your sound of choice. Personally I'm a regular computer user and over the years have used many software sequencers including the aforementioned Cubase, Reason, and FL Studio also. These programs take some getting used to, once you get the hang of it all however then it's all relatively easy to get going. Reason and FL Studio are the easiest options I feel for those just getting started in the world of electronic music production, with Cubase however the potential for production is far greater and it's therefore worth taking the time and effort getting to know this music sequencer inside out.

I personally started out with FL Studio and I must say it's absolutely excellent, before long however I wanted to experiment with other sequencers and dependent upon what you want from your sequencer it's worth trying out everything and settling with what feels right to you. Everyone's different and therefore there's no particular music sequencer that is set in stone as best. There are many music courses that can teach you how best to utilize music sequencer software such as Cubase and Reason, if you really want to produce electronic music and fail to work it out alone it therefore could be a great idea to embark upon one of these courses. Even if you feel your ability is fine with music sequencers, it still may be worth taking a course of this sort in order to further your knowledge and heighten your ability to produce excellent electronic music. I've taken a Cubase crash course and have to say that it was greatly beneficial to myself, the music I create is now so much more impressive and I therefore definitely suggest that taking a course of this sort
