You can also view the files that you can free memory on. The process can be quite tedious but it is definitely worth the effort.
Another cause of a slow computer performance is because of programs overloading at the start up of a computer. New programs that you download often automatically upload in the background "quietly and quickly". For most this is not the case.
How to fix it:
Click on: Start > All Programs > Startup
Right click and delete all the programs that you do not need running every time you run your computer.
If there are still programs running, they will normally be located on the taskbar. Right click on them and click options or properties. You should check for a box where you can un-check or check, where you can disable the program from starting up when you turn on the computer.
You've fixed up those programs that always pop up on start-up and delay the opening process of turning on the computer. Now, is your computer running slow because of the large amount of programs that you have downloaded? You might have a load of old programs you've installed off the web and from CD's and never used. Some take up lots of space and some do not. Free up your computer from all those horrible space wasters you never use.
How to fix it:
Click on: Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs
A program called 'Add or Remove Programs' should pop up. Go through the list of programs that you have installed on your computer. If you see one that you do not use or do not want, get rid of it. Click on it and then you should see it expands. You will see a button that says "Change/Remove" or "Remove". Click on it and follow the wizard.
However make sure that you know which programs that you are deleting, because you can sometimes make the mistake of deleting important programs that make your computer run.
Hopefully everything has gone smoothly and you've made your computer faster. If not and your computer starts playing up, there is always that nifty restore point.
