Eyes tighten to block
the morning light
as my husband showers,
a purring meow of
"Are you up?" intoned
to my ear followed by
kitty's bouncing exit.
A teen's music blares
and the scent of Axe
proliferates the air.
Cereal to choose
morning news,
socks and shoes,
papers to check blues,
always something to lose
Clothes? What to choose?
Too many to do's.
One to the playground
me off to class,
coffee in the lounge
morning greetings
and a hall pass,
explain Macbeth,
check citations,
listen to fears,
send one to detention.
Yogurt at my desk,
red pen in hand,
return an email,
attendance is the plan,
listen to a speech
on "How to Trap a Muskrat",
followed by tutoring,
and play practice too.
Pick up the little one
rush to a track meet
just in time to watch
the teen with triple leap,
arrive home with the dilemma
to cook or just frozen pizza
keep it simple is the plan.
Read a book,
help with homework,
a load of laundry too,
pop some popcorn
crack a Fresca
grade a speech
on of all things
"How to Trap a Muskrat",
set of tests
and then plan a lesson
on Anne Frank.
All is quiet
all in bed,
time for me
watch Jon Stewart
or maybe Olbermann
Look at Helium,
crank a poem out
and then it'll be
sweet dreams.

A day in my life
A sky of often-grey
A never-lifting cloud
An endless fall of rain
A bout of shining sun
Playing peek-a-boo
