How to make a "nest egg". This project is a fun and messy way to get your kids involved in decorating for spring, as well as creating gifts for Easter to give to friends and family members.
You will need:
Newspaper (to cover your working area)
an old bucket or disposable container
glue (either fabric, craft, or white)
yarn or string cut up into 6 inch strips
preferred colors: light blue, soft yellow, powder pink, pale green
*you may also choose to go with a color that matches the interior of a specific room you wish to place the finished project.
Balloons (enough to supply one for each "nest egg" being created
A permanent marker
One clothes pin per project (and a place to hang them while they dry)
Now get ready to roll up your sleeves for some sticky fun!
First, prepare your work area. Be sure to cover the table and floor with the newspaper to keep the mess contained. You're now ready to blow up your balloons and tie them off. Draw a circle on one side of the balloon large enough so that if it were an opening, you could fit your hand easily into it. *For certain decorating styles you could draw a matching circle on the opposite side of the balloon.
Pure the glue into your bucket or container. Dip the strips of yarn or string into the glue, being sure to coat them well. Now begin placing the strips onto the balloon, making sure that you leave the inside of the circled area clear.
Once the glue dries the balloon will be popped, be sure that the strings overlap one another enough to give the structure independent support without completely covering the entire area. When you feel the surface of the balloon has been sufficiently covered, place the projects up somewhere to dry, using the clothes pin to hang onto the tied off area of the balloon for a handle.
After the glue has completely dried, take it down and pop the balloon making sure you remove any pieces that may have stuck to the glue on the inside of the "nest egg".
Fill your creation with easter grass, brightly colored eggs, fake flowers, or anything else you can come up with to celebrate the season and the holiday.
The "nest eggs" can be placed around the house, used as easter baskets, or hung up as ornaments. Bring one to work and proudly display it in your office to show off your child's creative talents! Make them as gifts for grandparents, aunts, or uncles.
*For the older children, try giving them the challenge of creating one with thread. It takes longer, but the outcome is much more intricate and delicate.
