the show had a numerous television audience. It show is still popular in its remake version with updated special effects and new spins on the plot line.
Playing on the advancements of western technology and medicine, The Bionic Woman was a popular sci-tech show as well. The plot line developed around Jamie Sommers, originally a character in the less heralded but still popular show "the six million dollar man" who when fatally injured in a sky diving accident was "cyborged" into a half woman half machine scientific government super spy fighting extra terrestrials bent on world domination. This is easily the proto type for many a popular modern science fiction shows such as "Dark Angel".
Chryotechnics and other forms of time travel became a popular sub theme of many Science fiction shows. Buck Rogers in the 25th Century features an astronaut frozen in suspended animation only to be revived in the 25th century to battle for the existence of earth against the evil Draconians using such hi tech gadgets as a talking robot, a personal computer with a bit of attitude in the form of a necklace and a few laser weapons. The show originally aired from 1950-51 but was known for its popular updated version of the 70's. Probably the preface to several modern shows such as "Andromeda" and "The adventures of Buck Lightyear".
Logan's Run, often considered the precursor to many a post nuclear holocaust films and shows, featured a futuristic society in which inhabitants of the known civilization lived in sequestered cities, unknowing and fearful of the outside war since the nuclear war. The show was based on a popular sci-fi novel and movie of the same name. It also played on the popular 60's motto "don't trust anyone over 30" as most of the inhabitants were subject to death at this age in the form of "reinstitutionalization" carried out by the cities robots which maintained the living habitat of the cities citizens. The show featured the main character Logan who fled from his city to discover new and terrifying forms of life and human civilization outside his own biosphere. Films and television shows following this format include movies like "The thunder dome", "The Postman" and "Jericho".
Mork and Mindy was probably the most well known sci-fi/comedy of the era. Featuring Mork, an alien exiled from the planet Ork because he alone had a sense of humor, comes to earth in an attempt to understand humans. A retake on the 60's series "My favorite Martian", Mork entangles human and Orkish customs to come up with some of the most bizarre and hilarious social situations on television. A popular future show to follow along these lines was "Third Rock from the Sun".
Though there are dozens more television shows which aired during the 70's and can still be counted among the classics, these few are the ones most remembered as having brought the meat and beans to the age of sci-fi. Many a modern science fiction film and television show echo the themes brought to life by the actors and writers of the era considered the adolescence of science fiction entertainment.
