- Writing on a Budget: Time Saving Writing Tips
How many times have you caught yourself saying "There's not enough hours in the day"? I'm sure we all say it from time to time, and isn't it just the truth. With writing we really need to structure our time to ensure we make the very best use of it. Time is precious and it will slip through our fingers if not managed correctly and our writing hours are invaluable to us.
So how best to manage our time? We all have full lives with so much to do, yet it is essential to set the time aside for our all important writing. An valuable lesson I learned on my University course was time management and adhering to this is vital for prioritizing valuable writing time. I think the main thing that is important is to write when you have no other distractions around you, and at a time when nothing else needs your attention. So if you have a baby crawling around the house at mid-morning, highly active, this would not be a suitable time to consider writing.
So choose your time wisely. An ideal time would be when the house is quiet and there is nothing weighing on your mind. Rise early!, when your brain is rested and refreshed. If you can steal a few private hours before the rest of the house wakes, this writing time will be quiet and peaceful and totally invaluable. Get all of those nagging jobs out of the way before you even consider typing your first sentence. You need a clear mind to let your ideas grow and flourish without any mundane but necessary chores clouding your creativity. Even one whole hour without any distraction is worth more than three with lots. Also have your working space organized and tidy. This will save you time when it comes to sitting down and preparing to write. There is nothing more annoying than clutter all around you, as they say "A tidy home means a tidy mind". Ideas will come forth more freely without the eye being taken away by a huge pile of papers directly in your vision. Decide when will be the best time for you to write.
Prepare and organise your day and stick to the time that you have decided. Try to make it a routine, so that each day that designated time is always your Writing time'. Take notes! During the day when something inspires, write it down. Words, sentences,an idea, something that has impact, jot it down. Keep a small pad with you wherever you go, then those valuable and special inspirations will not be forgotton. I carry a dictaphone and keep my notes that way. I write a lot of poetry,
