silvery moon.
"Pardon me Mistress Moon. I really don't mean to be a bother, but may I ask one small favor? Just a tiny one that will not be much trouble for one as resplendent as yourself." Oliver lowered his head. He dared not look directly for fear his request would be denied.
"If I can be your humble servant little one I shall try," the moon replied. "I bid you hurry though. Soon it will be morn. Already I see King Sol stirring in the East. As you can plainly see, my twinkling handmaidens already flee for slumber."
"Oh thank you", Oliver replied in his most heartfelt voice. "In the distance is a shimmering pond. I would be forever grateful if you would provide the light so that I may see my reflection."
"Because your words were so kind when last we spoke I shall grant your wish, but you must hurry. There is not much time before I too must take leave."
Scrambling from beneath his hiding place Oliver sped. Over pebbles and under twigs he ran as fast as he could, which really wasn't very fast at all because he was so small and the distance so very great. With each few steps he stopped and looked from side to side. Danger might be lurking anywhere and everywhere. Down deep crevices and up slippery slopes he went. Murky puddles and slimy mud could not slow him. Oliver D. Plexippus would not to be stopped this night.
Then, before him was the pond. It looked so much larger than it had from off in the distance. But, It was even more beautiful than he could have imagined. He so wanted to tarry and admire it a bit, but he knew that time was fleeing. Already the shimmering water's darkness receded. King Sol approached just as the moon had warned.
Wasting not another second Oliver perched himself upon a smooth stone at water's edge. Stretching, oh so carefully across the quiet stillness, he looked down. At just that moment, all went dark again. There was no reflection. Twisting his body, he looked upward. A cloud again was toying with the silver moon.
"No, no", he shouted. "There is no time for foolish pranks. I must see myself in the shimmery mirror. I must know. Oh please. Sir Cloud, allow my vanity just this one time. I am so frantic that I fear that I might die from not knowing."
The small cloud, no doubt feeling sorry for Oliver's plight, drifted off. Once more he turned his eyes downward waiting for his reflection to echo back. At first he shut them tightly. "Oh please, oh please, oh please", he begged of no one in particular because there was no one to whom he could
