TV show reviews: Quantum Leap

Quantum Leap is a science fiction program that appeals to all of us who yearn for the ability to travel through time and correct things that are defective, changing details in a person's life that will impact on their future. The concept was a little bit different from the normal time travel fare where the traveler is in some kind of machine that transports him. In this instance, Sam Beckett "leaps" from one person to another, taking on their persona and living their life until he has the desired effect needed to change their lives for the better.

Scott Bakula played the main character role and would find himself in all manner of situations from week to week, leaping into the lives of both men and women and endeavoring to change their course of action in order to prevent some future catastrophe in their lives. Each episode had a particular story to tell and always had you rooting for Sam to reach his goal and change a person's life course for the better.

QUEST
One week, Beckett could be a woman who is in an abusive marriage and the next he is a black man struggling to cope with racism in his home town. He was always sent in to a situation with a specific purpose and would be responsible for identifying his role before taking the necessary action to correct the problem experienced by the person he inhabited. He was helped in his quest by his friend in the white suit, Al.

Quantam Leap was an outstanding concept for a science fiction program, opening up time travel in a different and unique way with the emphasis on changing individual lives as opposed to changing the world. Having enjoyed the current program as Beckett struggled to achieve his set purpose, we were left at the end of each show with Sam "leaping" into his next subject giving us a glimpse of what we could expect in next week's episode.

IMAGINATION
One minute we find Sam successfully changing the life he had been sent to alter and the next, he is in a brand new situation where the problem is only beginning. The concept of the show meant that the scriptwriters were limited only by their imagination as they could take Sam into any era and any situation without the need for any technical explanation. Quantam Leap was a show that could have run indefinitely as there appears to be no end of situations available to exploit.

Quantam Leap was a time travel science fiction program with a difference that could easily be revived and even expanded to include famous people from the past. The general storyline offers so much diversity and possibilities to make it a program science fiction enthusiasts would watch all over again.
