Living with the past

It is sad to say that some of us are held back from what the future has for us by our past. It is so ironical that something that could have happened even 20 years back still haunts us and makes us live in constant fear that it can happen again. To me this is what I call living in the past -something that we must get rid of.

So what makes us live in the past? Firstly, I think many of us have issues that we have failed to resolve since they happened. Such issues include past hurts and wrongs that people may have done to us and we have not forgiven them and let them go. At times, we may find this hard because we may still be living with this person and so the fear that they will hurt us again is real and very strong. We must realize that forgiveness is not for them; they are still going on with their lives as per normal. Forgiveness is for us to live a positive life and to reach our full potential.

Another reason why we choose to live in the past is because of strong perceptions that we have formed about things at an early age. Some of us are scared of the dark because when we were young we were told that ghosts roam around freely. Others are unable to associate with people from certain regions because of negative things that they were told about such people. We need to overcome these superstitious beliefs and walk in the night and associate with people who we believe to be evil. In so doing we shall be able to remove all inhibitions that hold us back.

Some of us live in the past also because we fail to accept that a certain event has happened. For some of us we fail to accept that a loved one has past on and never let go of them. For others we tend to cling to the good old days when we were rich or teenagers and try to live such a life. We must face the realities of today and not hide from them. We must accept the events that may have happened in our lives and move on.

It is important that we stop leaving in the past of things that we may have experienced or heard so as to live a full life. For some of us, living in the past makes us not take up opportunities that come our way and also be unable to trust anyone. We live in constant fear including the fear of failure. We tend to back out when we see things not going as we expected since we believe that things will turn out as they did yesterday. Some of us were told by our parents that we shall never amount to anything and thus we constantly live in that fear and accept that as our destiny when things go wrong.

Therefore
