Too many of us find this is a concept hard to understand thus making it impossible for them to believe that God is three persons yet one. I constantly wonder why they find it so hard to believe something that is so obvious to see through ourselves and nature. If we just spend a little time to think and see, then it will be so evident to us.
Firstly, the bible says that God made us in his own image and likeness. This means that we are alike to God in every respect and are a reflection of his nature. Since we already know that man is made up of three parts; the body which is the physical part that we see everyday and take care of, the soul which controls our every day thoughts body functions and the spirit which gives us life and controls our emotions, then it follows that God also is three in one made up of God the father, God the Son and God the Spirit.
Now that is the easy part to explain. The hard part to explain is how God can be three separate beings yet be the same person. Well, all of nature provides an answer it is just that we have not been keen and observant. Take a substance like water. When water is frozen and in its solid form, it is known as ice. Ice only exists at one place at a time but when the temperature increases, it starts to melt and flow in the form of water. When the heat is increased to very high temperatures the water disappears and becomes vapor.
In the same way God the father is seated up in heaven ruling everything in the universe. He once decided to come and help man out of his problems and traps by becoming God the son and flowing from heaven to earth to die for our sins. After his death, he decided to live in us by becoming invincible as God the Holy Spirit. Now just like in the earth water in one place is ice and in another place water is vapor, God is very much the same. He is in heaven, at the same time moving around and vapor all at once.
What is hard for us to understand is how God being three is still one. I need to clarify again that being in three different states at the same time does not mean that God is different from the other state. Water being in three states at the same time does not change the fact that it is still water. Maybe God is actually water, the bible says that he is life and he is in all things. Water is everywhere; 78% of our bodies is water and we cannot live even one day without taking water. Water is underneath the earth, surrounds the earth and is invisibly around us. May be what we actually breath is water and looking at the chemical structure of water, H2O, we see that Oxygen is part of water and is what we constantly breathe in to have life. It is surprising to think that Oxygen is also what causes fire to burn and is present in oil. Could this be to help us understand the nature of God?
