Teens: Evaluating sexual promiscuity in adolescents

by Tiffany Belle

Created on: April 12, 2008

With teen pregnancy on the rise, we need to take a step back and see why can't teenagers wait to have sex. Now, me being a Christian, I believe that sex is something that should only be shared between husband and wife. I know that this is not a common belief in today's society, but even so, teenagers are too young and immature to be having sex. They are not prepared for the consequences. If you were to ask a high school class if they were ready to raise a baby, all of them would probably state "no." But if you asked them how many of them were sexually active, according to today's statistics, more than half of them would say yes they are having sex. So why can't teenagers wait. What are the driving forces behind them wanting to have sex.

Everybody has inner drives. Normal teenagers have sexual interests and feelings. They want to be loved and need affirmation. As a result, they can become emotionally and sexually attracted to others around them and drawn toward physical intimacy. They feel if they have sex with their significant other or the person that they have a crush on, then they will be loved. Almost a hundred percent of the time, this is not the case. You do need to show love by having sex. In fact, you can show the most love to a person by choosing to wait.

The world is full of seductive messages. Fifty years ago, society generally supported the concept that marriage was the only time that people should have sex. During the 1960s and 1970s a cultural upheaval happened, sometimes called the sexual revolution, and the old ways of thinking about sex went out the window. Nowadays, almost all media (movies, television, music) promote the message that is okay to have sex before marriage. Teenagers are regularly exposed to the message and think that it okay for them to have sex, as that is what the media says. Some programs even tell teenagers that unless they are having sex, they are unattractive or social outcasts. This can be seen in many teen movies such as "Superbad."

Lack of supervision of their parents. It seems like life gets busier and busier. Many parents have very hectic schedules and can not continuously know where and what their teen is doing. Also, some parents become careless with their teenagers. The more you allow your teenager to be completely alone with their girlfriend or boyfriend, nature is more likely to take place, even when they have both committed not to have sex. Parents should not be overprotective, but should also not leave their teenager
