4 steps to getting kids to do their chores:
1. Consistency: Consistency is always important! As a child it is hard to not have a schedule, so if you develop a consistent time, it's easier for a child to remember to do a chore without being asked.
2. Positive Reinforcement: Remember to reinforce the chores in a positive way. If a child forgets,it's easy to punish them, but you should reinforce them positively and ask them nicely to complete each task. Frustration and stress can be easily noticed to a child, so be careful with how you present yourself
3. Incentives: Children are more apt to do something if they are getting something out of it. Not to say that they should have to get anything for doing something as simple as chores, but even positive reinforcement can be an incentive. Anything as simple as "You did a great job on your chores today," can help children keep on task and keep a repetitious schedule. Sometimes families use the incentive of money, which is an option, but remember incentives can come in many forms, negotiate with your kids and find out what works best for your household.
4. Communication: Use communication to pick and choose your battles. There will be times that chores are left uncompleted or done lazily. Be consistent, and emphasize the important of responsibility in a childs life.
There are many methods to use while still implementing these 4 steps:
1. Many families use a chore chart, and are checked off either daily or weekly to make sure each everything is getting done.
2. A weekly or monthly allowance is another method that families use, and can be negotiated when chores are done poorly.
3. There are many methods available, depending on you and your child's needs. Communicate with your family and devise a method that works best for you.
