Tips to diagnose and fix a slow running computer

programs that are running on the computer. This is not to be confused with the disk storage space your computer has. Disk space is the place that your programs and data are stored when the computer is off. When you run out of disk space, you can erase something or add more disk space (discussed below).

Insufficient RAM
If you've ever seen your computer suddenly start slowly painting a new window on your display screen, this is usually an indication that you have insufficient RAM to execute the current program(s) you now have running. It is an unmistakable image: several applications have open windows on your display: perhaps you have several browser windows open, your e-mail application, and you click on something like MS Word, for example. Suddenly, one of the windows on your screen begins to be erased, slowly, starting from the top, progressing downward. When you're out of RAM, Windows will try to support your activities by swapping running programs in and out of memory, saving their intermediate images on your disk - virtual memory. Once this starts happening significantly, you have to make a decision: run less programs at the same time or add more RAM.

The good news is, most computers from 0 to 15 years old have a straightforward and inexpensive RAM upgrade option or two. Typically, PCs purchased off-the-shelf from reputable vendors come with anywhere from 1/2 to 1/16 of the total possible memory that can be installed. Sometimes, you can buy a couple of memory modules and double your current complement of RAM. Those requiring a radical change may have to substitute the current memory modules installed with higher density modules - all, available from the manufacturer at a reasonable cost. Performing this type of upgrade requires minimal tools and careful consideration to static electricity.

Inadequate Disk Storage
if you continually receive errors when trying to install new applications on your PC or save data, the problem may be that you have insufficient disk storage available. Adding more disk space can be done in one of two ways: replacing the current disk drive with a larger drive; or adding an additional drive. Each option is most likely technically possible and may be an involved process requiring skilled technicians. The good news is, disk storage has become radically less expensive in the recent past.

CPU Upgrade/Overclocking
Most of the more recent processors used on motherboards today are not operating at their maximum clock speed. Many motherboards, to some extent, support the changing of the CPU clock speed. This is not recommended. The faster a microprocessor runs, the more heat it generates, easily reaching an overheated condition. This can cause permanent damage to the CPU and should not be attempted without adequate technical experience.
