sent. Unlike Adam Sandler movies before, the silliness and tongue in cheek comedy is not quite compatible with the story they're trying to tell, and therefore disappears almost altogether.
Whether this works for the movie or doesn't is open for debate. If you're going in to see another "Happy Madison", "Big Daddy" or "Wedding Singer" - you'll likely be disappointed. If you have an open mind and allow the filmmakers to control the ride, you'll likely find it more than you were expecting.
Personally, I think it is one of Adam's weaker movies, second maybe to "Spanglish" - which, incidentally, suffered from much of the same complaint. But given Adam's done remarkable things such as the movies listed above, even a weak Adam Sandler movie is better than some of the stuff that comes out each year.
Screenwriters Steve Koren and Mark O'Keefe have tread this territory much more successfully in the past; both credited with the more effective comedy/message movie "Bruce Almighty". Their hearts are very much on their sleeves in "Click", as was director Frank Coraci - who previously worked with Adam on hits "The Waterboy" and "The Wedding Singer". One could even argue - too much so.
It's not what you expect from a typical Adam Sandler movie.
Perhaps, just perhaps, it's more.
