calls it, she sets out on her own to discover the importance of these particles to the fabric of the worlds. Lyra and Will also discover The Subtle Knife, an instrument which cuts through the divides between the infinite numbers of worlds. At the end of the book Will meets the famous arctic explorer from Lyra's world called Stanislaus Grumman on a night walk and realizes that this man is his father John Parry. He tells Will that the knife is the key to everything but is then killed by his ex-lover, a witch. When he returns to his camp Lyra is missing but there are two angels waiting for him.
In the final book of the trilogy, The Amber Spyglass, the angels tell Will he must take the knife to Lord Asriel, who is waging war on the Authority'. However Will is first determined to find Lyra who is being held by Mrs Coulter high in the mountains. On the way he is joined by allies of Lord Asriel, Chevalier Tialyis and Lady Salmakia tiny beings called Gallivespians. The Church leaders, opposed to the war on the Authority, send out Father Gomez to follow Mary Malone in order to eventually find and kill Lyra before she can play her part in Lord Asriel's war. Mary Malone finds herself in a strange world dominated by diamond-shaped four-legged people called mulefa. She finds out that their world is dying because sraf, also known as Dust and dark matter, is leaving. She vows to help them and builds an instrument to help her see that sraf, a spyglass made of amber. Will rescues Lyra and they travel to the world of the dead so that they can release the ghosts trapped there however they must painfully leave their dmons behind. Mrs Coulter, captured by Lord Asriel's forces, steals a ship and travels to see the Church leaders where she discovers they are building a bomb that will find and kill Lyra. She tries to stop the bomb and although it does not kill Lyra is creates an abyss. As Lord Asriel and the leader of angels Metatron are at war, Lyra and Will find the Authority and release him to float away into the atmosphere. Mrs Coulter and Lord Asriel then take Metatron down into the abyss with them. Searching for their lost dmons Lyra and Will enter the world of the mulefa and find Mary Malone. After realizing they have fallen in love the sraf stops rushing out of the world and they find their dmons. The couple learn they must return to their own separate homes as all of the gaps between worlds must be closed. They agree to meet every year in the same place in their separate
