2008 Olympics: Best websites to follow the Olympics

There are many websites covering the Beijing Olympics already, and no doubt the numbers will mushroom as time marches towards the opening ceremony.

The official Beijing Olympics website is at: http://en.beijing2008.cn/. This is the Chinese website (in English) which has links to all the latest news, ticketing, as well as specific links to each sport in the games. There are also fun links to wallpapers, screensavers and various competitions.

A Chinese site with lots of useful information (in English) is: http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/o lympics/. This site has maps of the venues and comprehensive schedules of the events. There are also links to buy tickets - if you can get the links to work! Another good Chinese site is: http://www.china.org.cn/olympi c/node_1114380.htm.

The US team's official website is at: http://www.usoc.org/. This site has a lot of merchandise for sale, but is clunky and hard to navigate. It may even be possible to buy tickets for the Olympics from this site... somewhere... maybe.

Another good site is the UK's official Olympic site at: http://www.olympic.org/uk/inde x_uk.asp. This site has a great history of the Olympic movement, including a series of historical videos, and there is a good Education section on the philosophy of the Olympics, and another section on the paralympic games.

The website: http://www.mapsofworld.com/oly mpics/beijing-2008-olympics/in dex.html has extensive information on the schedules, venues and events, and also has links to a number of websites that sell tickets to the games.

A blog on the political issues surrounding the Beijing Olympics is at: http://www.2008-summer-Olympic s-beijing-china.com/blog/ and is regularly updated. Read articles here (or find links to articles) that explain why some want to boycott the games, and what the human rights violations are all about.

The Reporters without Borders' website on the Olympics also has information on the background to the Beijing Olympics and the human rights abuses occurring in China. It is at: http://www.rsf.org/rubrique.ph p3?id_rubrique=174.

A good website for buying tickets is: http://www.beijingticketing.co m/, but keep your credit card handy and your hat on. Another site you can use to buy (outrageously priced) tickets is: http://www.viagogo.co.uk/Sport s-Tickets/Olympic-Summer-Games -Beijing. Of course, you could also just watch it all on TV and spend the money you save on a world cruise, or something like that.

Finally, if you're in the mood for a comedy-spoof website about the Olympics, you can always try: http://www.thespoof.com/news/s poof.cfm?headline=s3i32880. I'm not sure the Chinese will approve of these articles, especially the story about the Klingon cloaking device for the Olympics torch, but then it's probably on a server they cannot block.
