are undemanding. The ease of enrolling, flexible schedule, and growing popularity of online courses can mislead one into thinking that the courses must be easy. Distance education classes are as challenging as their traditional face to face counterparts. Technology requirements intrinsic to these courses can make them more demanding; they are certainly more complex.
Students should know what is expected of them in order to pass the course. Good teachers make course requirements explicit, answering questions students may have such as:
What assignments or examinations are required?
How are assignments to be submitted?
How will exams be given?
What constitutes required class participation?
Will communication in a chat room or via discussion board be required?
How much time will a successful student commit to the course on a weekly basis?
How will course material be presented?
What formats will the material be in, e.g., PowerPoint, pdf, or web pages?
What is the course schedule? Is it self-paced?
Are there any events that must be attended in person or online at a specific date and time?
Is there a schedule of course readings, assignments, and exams?
One of the most stimulating developments in the World Wide Web is the ever-increasing quantity and quality of distance learning courses. Awareness of the pitfalls common to these courses can help students optimize their potential for success in online classes.
