Purchasing a country house: Factors to consider

by Jon Coe

Moving to the country may seem like a dream come true for most people. However, those that have been living in the country all their lives, take certain things for granted. But, for an outsider looking in, that way of life may wind up quite shocking for them and it may even send them running back to the lights.

I grew up in the country and now I live in a city. I do miss the country very much, especially the memories that I left behind there. The following dialogue is strongly based on some of those memories and experiences, so I hope that this account will be useful to those considering that "big move."

"I'm going to put another log on the fire." Says Jim.

"Okay, but watch out for the earwigs and spiders, I can't stand to watch them burn alive." Says Jim's mother.

"Has anyone seen the cat?" Asks Jim's dad as he enters the room with a mouse trap dangling from his good arm.

"How's your arm doing sweetheart. Did you manage to get that tetanus shot?" Inquires Jim's mother.

"No dear, I didn't. Anyway, the chain saw was pretty clean. I don't think it'll get infected, I use the best lubricants, besides I managed to find a good bottle of hydrogen-peroxide, so I should be okay." Replies dad gritting his teeth as he tries to get a signal on the television set.

"Oh here comes Fluffy, good kitty..Aaaaahh!" Screams mom, jumping up onto the table. "G..g..get that thing out of here!"

"It's alive mom. It's alive!" Shouts Jim chasing a small rodent around the living room. WHAM! "That's a fine piece of oak." Jim picks the dead mouse up by it's tail, takes to the back door and flings it out into the dead of the night, as if it were a lump of limp linguini.

"Good boy Jimmy." Praises dad. "Oh, did you manage to get to school today?"

"Sorry dad, no I didn't." Replies Jim, smiling. "The school bus couldn't make it up the hill."

"That's okay son, perhaps you could finish digging that trench tomorrow, then I can lay down some more pipe work to the new septic tank.....If you can't get the bus again, that is?" Dad winks at Jim and Jim winks back.

"Your mother didn't look too well again today sweetheart. Do you think it's time to get her to the hospital?" Asks mom, looking at dad with a concerned half cocked eyebrow.

"Nah, she'll be alright. Perhaps you can make her some of that stew tomorrow, that'll perk her up. Besides, them city doctors don't know what they're doing these days." Replies dad, biting off a chunk of deer jerky.

"Dad, I have to go to the bathroom again, do you think it's safe to flush?"
