Using spacers with asthma inhalers

Do you have an asthma inhaler that you never use? Let me guess why. The spray comes out too fast, hits your tongue, tastes bad, and does nothing for your breathing, right?

A couple of years ago I was diagnosed with asthma and I went through the same thing. I ended up using a nebulizer-a noisy contraption that made vapor of a liquid prescription medicine that I could then inhale through a mask. Effective, but inconvenient.

Two years later, after a bad asthma attack, three nebulizer treatments in the emergency room, a steroid shot, and all kinds of funky prescriptions, a new Dr. prescribed me a spacer to use with my albuterol inhaler. That's right, a spacer.

Now, I'd tried spacers before. Hard plastic tubes that were supposed to slow down the medication, spacers were a waste of money in my opinion, so I was skeptical.

The Dr. produced a plastic accordion-ish bag called the InspirEase and showed me how to use it. Amazingly, this is the spacer that I had needed all along. I don't know how long it has been on the market, but it has literally been a life-saver for me over the past couple of months.

The albuterol sprays into the plastic bag part of the spacer, then you inhale and hold in the medication to a count of ten before exhaling. WOW, what a difference. I could actually tell the medicine was getting into my lungs.

If you've been diagnosed with asthma but you've given up on your inhaler, ask your Dr. about this product. I really believe it will help you.
