Fibromyalgia is non-life threatening and non-progressive syndrome that affects the upper and lower torso and limbs. It causes widespread muscle and joint pain. It is estimated that 2% of the population suffer from this syndrome and is most prevalent in adults 20-50 years of age. Women are diagnosed the most with the female to male ration being 9:1. Although pain is unmeasurable and cannot be seen, this syndrome is an accepted social security disability due to its devastating symptoms.
Extreme fatigue and skin sensitivity are also directly associated with this disorder. Other symptoms include headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, and mood swings. Symptoms will sometimes be almost non-existent then come on with a vengeance. Lack of quality sleep, physical exertion, stress, and weather changes all contribute to painful episodes. Limiting these tend to improve a patients pain threshold as do eliminating risk factors.
Exact causes are not known, but researchers speculate trauma and surgery play a role as do diseases that affect the muscles, such as Lyme disease. Some doctors believe there may be an underlying psychological catalyst such as stress or depression. These problems may cause abnormal levels of serotonin or dopamine in the body. A doctor can help stabilize these critical chemicals.
Although there is no definitive test, there are certain criteria a doctor looks for in a patient. The pain has to be widespread, affecting the whole body for longer than 3 months. Skin sensitivity is tested by applying a force equivalent to 39 newtons to 15 tender points on the body. 11 of the points must test positive for pain. There is no cure, but the symptoms can be managed by numerous options ranging from prescribed medication to holistic treatments.
Medications such as pain relievers and muscle relaxers make the pain tolerable. Sometimes anti-depressants and anti-seizure medications have a positive effect. Cannabis has been self prescribed and reported to have helped, but remains illegal to possess and use. Chiropractic care and acupuncture are a few non-drug choices a patient may try along with physical therapy and massage. Bath soaks in Epsom salts have also been reported by sufferers to have helped.
Recognizing the signs and symptoms is the first step to getting an affirmative diagnosis. The quicker one seeks helps, the sooner he/she will be on the road to relief. Reduce stress, acquire good sleep each night, eat healthy, and limit excessive physical exercise. Seek out a doctor experienced with Fibromyalgia and follow his/her instructions. A good doctor patient relationship is crucial. Life can be bearable again with perseverance and compliance to doctors orders.
