Classic fantasy films of the 60s

As most people know, the 1960s were a decade of change and emotional revolution. Social mores were questioned, with some being sundered completely. Attitudes regarding sex, gender, politics and race were changed during this period, never to truly be the same. Due to such upheaval, it's no wonder that the 60s were a time of interesting, challenging films. Here are some classic fantasy films from this decade.

We haven't listed these in any kind of order, but we recommend all of them.

*2001: A Space Odyssey
A challenging, beautiful, instant classic based on the novel by Arthur C. Clarke. Stanley Kubrick worked with Clarke to write the screenplay, and then Kubrick directed the film itself.

The plot is deceptively simple. In prehistoric times, a pack of ape-men happens upon a black monolith. The monolith imparts to these creatures the knowledge of tool use. Thousands of years later, an expedition to the moon finds another monolith. It is made clear that humanity's evolution is being helped.

But now, the expedition to find the culture that placed the monoliths has competition. As they journey along, led by Dr. Bowman, the computer running the ship begins to think that maybe it ought to evolve, rather than man. This computer, the legendary HAL, becomes one of the most thought-provoking cinematic antagonists of all time.

Filmed with gentle, patient love, 2001 is an absolute, unadulterated classic.

*The Exterminating Angel
We list this movie not because it will entertain or inspire you as a viewer. It is on this list because of its absolute unconventionality and influence on the world of cinematic storytelling. Have you ever seen a movie that didn't seem to tell much of a story? Did you ever think, "I wish this flick would get to the point?"

The Exterminating Angel, by Luis Bunuel, is likely one of the main catalysts for non-linear, non-traditional movies. The movie shows a luxurious dinner party coming to a close. But the guests slowly realize that they cannot leave! They are completely incapable of leaving the site of the party.

We see these people devolve into barbarity and individualism. The movie poses questions about civilization, elitism and humanity. Not a terribly accessible movie, you will still find it worth your while to track down.

*The Little Shop of Horrors
Roger Corman's landmark black comedy has one of the largest cult followings of any movie. Corman directed the screenplay written by Charles Griffith on a budget of $27,000. Not only that, omitting a few callbacks
