Ouija boards really work. That's the problem. They work in different ways, though, and so we need to examine what a ouija board is. A ouija board is any flat surface with symbols on it. On this board is placed a planchette, a pointer of some sort. Participants place their fingers lightly on the planchette and allow it to slide on the board, pointing to various symbols. After asking a question, someone records the symbols that are pointed to and interprets an answer. There are three ways in which ouija board work.

SYMPATHETIC MOTION
Ouija boards work because of a phenomena of sympatheitc motion. Your hand, even when you aren't aware of it, is trembling very, very slightly. You can't consciously control this motion. But your unconscious mind, your dream brain, does. What that means is, that when you are thinking of a question, your uncopnscious mind will supply an answer and your hand will unconsciously provide that answer. This is a legitimate effect, and it can allow us to see visibly the answers from our own subconscious. There is nothing magical about this, it is a function of psychology.

FRAUD
If one person wishes, he can very subtly manipulate the planchette to give the effect of choosing his selected symbols, but never letting on that he is actually in control. Such deception is unethical, but, it's all in fun, right? Let me warn you that it takes a lot of practice to escape detection, and most peop-le are naturally skeptical.
In such a case, this turns into a practical joke. Who does someone love? Oh, let's have the plancette say it's someone she hates?

DEMONIC INTERFERENCE
The ouja board is notorious as a portal for demonic activity. When one opens oneself to the copntrol of otherworldly powers, what Paul called spirits of the air, or authorities, powers, thrones and even the Prince of this World, one is taking a terrible risk. As soon as you allow a supernatural entity access into your mind, you are opening a door to all sorts of possibilities, and very few of those possibilities are going to have positive consequences. You wouldn't allow a stranger into your house without being very careful. Allowing spiritual access to your mind is worse, for supernatural powers are much more likely to be destructive.

Think of it in these terms. Angels do not play ouija. They're too busy doing God's will. If you think that ghosts of departed people are moving the planchette, then imagine what their motives could possibly be for manipulating you like this. Were they a child molester, a murderer, a psycho? Are you willing to play a game with Jack the Ripper, knowing that he will lie and cheat in order to harm you? Or maybe it is a demon who has access to you. Are you willing to trust demonic powers with your life? Or worse?

Nope. I think that ouja boards are too risky to play with, even in the best of circumstances. Maybe a psychiatry student can use it for therapeutic reasons, but I doubt it. It is more likey to have very unforeseen and negatiove consequemces.
