How to decide to work from home

The decision of whether or not to work from home is a difficult one to make. It can also be scary or exciting, depending on your personal circumstance. If, for example, you are a married woman whose husband is the primary breadwinner and you just want a little extra money in your pocket at the end of the month, this can be an exciting opportunity to try something new. On the other hand, if you are a single parent with little hungry mouths depending on you to fill them, it can be pretty scary to risk everything on a new venture.

There are a few things to consider as you go about making your decision. First and foremost, you need to think about what you want to do. Not only the exact type of work, but also whether you want to be self-employed or find an employer that will allow you to work in your home. Self-employment will give the opportunity for greater income potential, but also the risk of periods of time with no income at all. Working from home for an established company will guarantee a paycheck, as well as still having a boss to answer to.

Or, do you want to fulfill a lifelong dream, such as writing a novel? Be sure and consider this option carefully as it may provide no paycheck other than self-fulfillment for quite some time. In some situations, it is better to do this in your spare time and keep your day job, so to speak.

Another thing to think about is whether your personality is suitable to enjoy being home. Far be it from me to understand, but I know people who actually thrive on the office environment of corporate America. It is what drives them to excel. They feed off the drama, the excitement, the busyness around them and they love it! If this is you, you may want to rethink how much you would really want to give that up.

Your work habits will be a great determining factor of your success as a home entrepreneur. It is not all fun and games just because there is no boss hanging over your shoulder. It will take hard work and dedication, especially as you start out. You will need to be able to shut out the world that is clamoring for your time because they don't understand that this is your new job if you are sitting in your own home. The distractions can be difficult to get around.

The high tech world we live in offers many opportunities to "cyber-commute" and enjoy the many comforts of our own homes as we make our bread and butter. Consider all the options, and if this still seems like the right thing for you, put aside your fears and take the leap!
