As a teacher of computing to adults I find that overwhelming majority of my students are seniors. Why do they come and what benefits do they hope to gain?
Just knowing the absolute basics of computing makes an older person feel that they have some idea of what everyone else is talking about. Once they've used a mouse and turned on a computer, suddenly all the computer speak that their grandchildren use without thinking twice starts to make sense. They feel more in touch with the modern world.
The internet has huge benefits for older people who can master its use. Online shopping is the first example. If you are getting older and find it hard to reach the supermarket or get your shopping home you can order over the internet and your groceries will be delivered to your door.
Buying presents for friends and relatives also becomes easier. Many online shops will allow you to order goods to be sent directly to the recipient. You don't have to wrap them and find a post office. Internet ordering takes care of all that.
The internet is a wonderful way of keeping in touch with friends and family overseas. If you can master the use of a webcam and internet telephony then you can see and talk to your family for free. Imagine how wonderful it is for a grandparent to see a new grandchild in Australia for the first time live on a webcam, when previously all they could have seen is a photograph.
As most younger people communicate by email or text most of the time, using a computer and email allows older people to keep in touch with younger members of their family, even if they just live in the next town!
Many bills can be paid online. No need to find a postbox, or wait for a bus in the cold and rain to take you into town.
The word processor on a computer can be a marvellous tool for an older person whose hands have become stiffer and perhaps more shaky and who find it difficult or impossible to write. Yes, that makes using the computer harder too, but they can take time to correct mistakes with a computer and finish up with a readable letter.
A computer can be a great source of entertainment too. Many of my older students love playing the simple games that come with the older versions of Windows. Chess and bridge are also popular. If you can't find a chess or bridge partner, or simply want extra practice between club meetings, find a program that will allow you to play against the computer.
There are many internet sites and chatrooms dedicated to older computer users. Yes, we hear a lot about the dangers of using internet chatrooms, but if you use a reputable site you will be safe. If you are housebound, making new friends online can put you back in touch with the world.
Online dating can be a great way of meeting a new partner. Don't laugh, I know several mature people who have done just that. And just because you are older, don't forget the basic precautions of meeting someone face to face for the first time.
If you are a mature person, don't be afraid of the computer. Go for it - have a go. The first time you talk to your grandchildren over the internet they will think you are the coolest grandparent on the planet. How much of a confidence booster is that?
