Racial inequality or oppression: Do they truly exist in today's society?

by Joseph Alexander

Created on: April 10, 2008

Even though as Americans we hope of racial equality would be so, it is very noticeable that there is some inequality between races in the United States. There has always been inequality and oppressions since the first meetings between different races, and one could look throughout history to see what happened.

As time has past, there has been major movements for equality. Almost a half century ago there was a civil rights movement that attempted to finally bring black and white Americans together. As the birthday of one of the Civil Rights Movement has just passed, that of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., all of the United States, and the world at that took some time to remember what Mr. King was teaching to us all, and to evaluate how far we have come.

How far have we come? Honestly not that far. Sure, there is not as strong of an inequality as there was in such time as the 1960's, but one can see just by watching their local evening news that inequality still exist. It is not just whites trying to be over blacks, but both sides are equally responsible for treating the other in a sense that they would not treat their friends.

Today there is a strong possibility to see the dreams of Dr. King and of others come true, but we all have to work together and be cooperative with each other. It will take some time, and it will need some patience, but with both time and patience, the world can become a better place.

Racial inequality truly does exist in today's society, but as we are forced to live closer together in this growing world, we will all learn how to treat each other equally. As the actions of the past are quickly growing further away, the actions of the future are growing nearer. We can change, and we can all be equal.

There is no reason in today's society to be unequal, especially in the United States. Be progressive, and treat everyone as you would want to be treated. Help your neighbor, and pass on help you receive. Wish everyone a good day, and remember to smile. Just don't stay inside your shell, go out and become friends with another student or co-worker that just happens to be the opposite race. Welcome everyone into your group, and become change.

All are equal, and even though there is still inequality, we are all going in the right direction to equality.
