The hurricane season in Mexico

Hurricane season in Mexico? Now you would think that we wouldnt even have to write an article on this one. Wouldnt you think the travel agencies would post this information and have everyone memorize it? Well, not so much. It doesnt look too good for tourism when you are warned to stay away.

Now we all should know when hurricane season is in the United States. It officially runs from the first of June to the last day of Novemeber. So do all hurricanes in the world occur at the same time or a different time?

How about you figure it out? I will help you by giving you the dates of some hurricanes that slammed into Mexico

September 28, 2007 Hurricane Lorenzo
September 4, 2007 Hurriance Felix
October 30, 2005 Hurricane Beta
November 17, 2005 Hurricane Gamma
July 21, 2007 Hurricane Emily
July 11, 2003 Hurricane Claudette
August 16, 2003 Hurricane Erika

OK. So what do you think? Sure looks to me like the hurricane season in Mexico is the same time as the Atlantic Hurricane Season. But wait. There is another complication. Mexico is a pretty skinny country, and so there is water on both sides. The Hurricanes that we just examined all come from the tropical south Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico. But what about the Eastern Pacific Ocean? Are there hurricanes there too? Well, actually there are. But let's take a look again to see when they happen.

June 2, 2007 Hurricane Barbara
September 4, 2007 Hurricane Henrietta
May 20, 2005 Hurricane Andrian
October 12, 2004 Hurricane Lester
September 19, 2004 Hurricane Javier
October 2, 2003 Hurricane Olaf
October 9, 2003 Hurricane Nora

OK. So it sure looks like the hurricane season on the east coast of Mexico (on the Gulf of Mexico), and the hurricane season on the west coast of the Mexico (on the Eastern Pacific Ocean), are exactly the same. So if you are planning on visiting Mexico, it would not be very smart to go in late spring to early fall. Your safest time would be to go when it is nice and cold in most of the United States. December, January and February would be the best times. I wonder if the resorts in Mexico offer discounts to visit during hurricane season?
