Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) still play an important role in the auto industry. There still exists a demand for these cars for several reasons. First of all, it is big and thus, people feel safer and more secure when driving in one. Second, because of its size, SUVs have a lot of storage capacity. This makes SUVs a popular choice among families with kids because an SUV can hold a lot of people and can carry things such as sports equipment, backpacks, luggage, and various other baggage that a family may need to haul that day. Last, SUVs have the power to tow things. Therefore if you have a trailer and a family, an SUV is a more popular choice than a pick-up truck because the SUV has the same amount of towing power as most pick-up trucks and can comfortably seat a family of six. Anybody who has ridden in a pick-up truck knows that even if the truck has an extended cab, there is not much room in the back seat.
These are just a few reasons why SUVs were popular and remain popular today. However, SUVs are notorious gas guzzlers. Therefore, with the rising price of gasoline and ever publicized threat of environmental impact, many people think that the SUV is a bad automobile purchase decision. However, I disagree. Even though it is true that older SUVs are gas guzzlers and that they pollute, the advantages stated above for owning an SUV cannot be denied. Additionally, with the rise of hybrid and alternate fuel technology, the SUV is no longer a serious gas guzzler or polluter. As such, the question should be whether or not we should still be buying gasoline powered SUVs.
Even though the negatives of gasoline powered SUVs exist, the biggest advantage of buying a gasoline powered SUV is that they are less expensive than a hybrid or alternative fuel SUV. As such, if your family is on a tight budget, you may have to settle for the gasoline powered version in order to save money. However, should you be in the position that you can afford a hybrid or alternative fuel powered SUV, then you should definitely forgo the gasoline option and buy the hybrid or alternative fuel powered model.
The point is, SUVs still have a purpose and a use in our society. As such, SUVs should still be purchased. However, should you be able to purchase a cleaner burning and more gasoline efficient SUV, you should do your part for the environment and purchase such a model.
