Eczema is often referred to in medical circles, as the itch that rashes' as scratching it can cause a rash. While eczema may look different from person to person, it usually appears as a dry, itchy, flaky patch on the sufferer's skin.
Eczema is an inflammatory response of the immune system, to irritants, which can range from rough clothes to harsh weather climate. One of the most common forms of eczema is atopic dermatitis, which largely affects infants and children. Most children outgrow this kind of eczema. In an unlucky few, it continues to become a chronic disease in adulthood.
While it's often hard to tell what might trigger the symptoms, the best way to treat the itching is to keep the skin extremely moist and lubricated. When eczema is severe and over the counter lubricants don't seem to help, a trip to the dermatologist is in order. Prescription topical creams go a long way in bringing relief to severe inflammation. However, for a milder form, the following treatments may help:
HUMIDIFIERS: Extremely dry air such as that found indoors can be quite harsh on already sensitive skin. Invest in a humidifier to keep the home air moist. Unless you buy a large unit, units will be required for each room that you use frequently. Alternatively, you could invest in a mobile unit. And make sure to keep one next to your bed when you sleep.
TEMPERATURE: Sudden temperature changes can also be a problem. Going from warm indoor temperatures to cold outdoor climates can aggravate the condition. An option may be to wear layered cotton clothing to give the body time to adjust gradually.
LUKEWARM SHOWERS: Avoid baths if possible and go in for lukewarm showers instead. Try not to use soap on a daily basis, unless your skin is really dirty. A quick rinse under the shower should make you feel refreshed and get you clean, without drying out the skin too much. If you do need to use soap, use a mild cleanser such as Cetaphil or Eucerin which is gentle on the skin.
MOISTURIZE: This is the key to keeping your skin lubricated. It's best to use one with emollients, which are moisturizers which soothe, smooth and add water to hydrate the skin. Cetaphil, Eucerin and Aquaphor are all good examples of creams with an emollient. Keep lotion tubes around the house, car and workplace, to use as and when needed. If your child suffers from eczema, stick a tube of lotion in his school bag. The best time to slather on moisturizer is straight after a shower when the skin is still moist. However, you
