At the beginning of my search for home-based income, I was drawn in by the Specialty Merchandise Corporation (SMC) television commercial. Here were happy people, claiming substantial income all by selling what looked like quality gift ware and household decor. So, I signed up, paid my large membership fee, and waited impatiently for the membership package to arrive.
Reselling SMC Merchandise - Products
The products in the extensive Specialty Merchandise Corporation catalog run the gamut from the ludicrously overpriced junk to really good deals. Over the years I have been involved with the company, their quality has improved, especially in the home decor areas. Some statues made from the ever-present alabasterite, which is a composite material, can be found in dollar stores at prices well below the "wholesale" price in the SMC program. All the products I ordered from them arrived in good condition and were well packaged.
Reselling SMC Merchandise - Service
The SMC member package comes with an extensive notebook full of information about different ways of selling the products. Since I already had a plan in my head, I did not look over it too closely. They also, supposedly, signed me on for a supportive guide to help me with any questions. I contacted the company once to ask a question and did not receive an answer. However, I was able to find the information I needed in the welcome packet.
Reselling SMC Merchandise - Competition
The biggest problem with getting involved with SMC is the level of competition. It is a very popular home business program and, therefore, there are thousands of people trying to sell the same products. In order to build your own retail business, you either have to be excellent at marketing, or lower your prices to near wholesale levels.
Reselling SMC Merchandise - Results
After much consideration, I concluded that maintaining a relationship with Specialty Merchandise Corporation (SMC) was not worth the membership fees. However, I still do sell several of their products by using an online sub-wholesaler. These products are niche specific and are offered with other products from other wholesalers.
In conclusion, SMC does not get my recommendation to people looking to start a home based business. Products, pricing, and high competition combine to form a less-than-attractive business opportunity.
