violence in the media has no effect on today's society. I wish everyone could be exposed to it and not be poisoned by it. That is not the case, though.
We now have children committing battery and murders. That saddens me as much as it scares me. More often than not these days, I've noticed that violence is the first reaction from many people in society when something does not go their way. People get into an argument and then one of them simply pulls out a gun and shoots the other person. It's happening more and more.
Is violence in entertainment contributing to this behavior? Do people think that it is perfectly okay to solve their problems with guns, knives, bombs, or a baseball bat? Is the entertainment industry bombarding the human populace with violent images and propaganda? Is it some kind of behavioral science experiment?
The media is not fully to blame, however, for crime and violence in our society. Other culprits are the steady decrease in moral values, parental supervision, and guidance in society. Many children are left home alone after school to essentially fend for themselves while their parents work. Here in California, the government views a thirteen-year-old as a person capable of spending the day alone.
Personally, I am completely against that. Perhaps it is because I remember being that age. Young teens need guidance and supervision; otherwise, many of them lose their innocence rather quickly. Alcohol, drugs, sex, gang affiliation, and violent media are all readily available to children and teens in this country. Without proper guidance by an adult, children and teens often turn to those destructive forces to fill the void.
What kind of affect is violence in entertainment having on society? Apparently, a bad one. People in every age bracket are committing crimes. Children disappear on a daily basis. People walk onto school campuses carrying guns. Teens are choking each other for fun. People are dressing up in Halloween costumes and murdering their entire family with a machete. We don't seem to be doing much about it. It is just another news story.
What truly causes violent behavior? Is it the media? Is it the lack of parenting skills? Is it years of abuse finally exploding on the surface? Is it the fact that people are suffering the worst betrayals by their priests, police officers, or family members? Is it because the system is letting it get out of control? Is it a combination of these factors and others not mentioned? I don't know for sure, but whatever it is, I fear the worst is still ahead.
