Poetry: Alarm clocks

EYE-OPENERS

A morning person, I am not.
My covers are a comfy spot.
But I must rise to face the times,
And so I set some extra chimes.

A numbered clock is on the shelf;
I set it there last night, myself.
My cell phone's set to ring as well,
To rouse me from my sleepy shell.

My kids have set their timers too,
So we will not be overdue.
But none of these will do the trick;
Perhaps we'll have to call in sick.

We stay up late to watch our shows,
Until the morning sun, it glows.
Although we know that, all too soon,
The day will call us from our swoon.

Technology, I can refuse.
I'll shut it off or just hit "snooze."
So how will I know when to rise?
I have a happy compromise.

If I should try to oversleep,
Into my bed, quite soon will creep
The best alarm clock of them all.
My hungry cat will caterwaul.

She'll lick my eyelids, paw my face
To draw me from my sleepy space.
Just then, the dog will wag her tail,
And these two pets, they will prevail.
