Kissing up to your boss is a must if you want to get ahead

I hate it when people think they have to kiss up to the boss to get ahead. I think that the best way to get ahead is to work hard and learn a lot about the job. Only the most insecure people feel the need to kiss up to the boss. If a person has confidence and knowledge, they will be able to get ahead and stay ahead better than those who kiss up to the boss.

An example of this would be having two people applying for a job. One of them is a friend or relative of the boss but is not really qualified for the position and the other is highly qualified but is not related to the boss. If they have been working for the company and are trying for a promotion, the one who is a friend of the boss might try kissing up to him to make himself look better so that he can get the job. Any good boss would recognize this to be the case and just ignore it since the other applicant is obviously better qualified. Chances are that the person who tries to make himself look good when he is trying to get something like a promotion will not do well in the position and will wind up getting fired or demoted or babied the whole time.

The ideal situation would be to do a job that you are qualified to do. If the boss expects you to do something that is not normal for the job, you should be compensated for the extra work. It should not have to be a bribe. If you are not the most qualified candidate, then you should not get the higher paying job. On the same note, if the boss expects you to kiss up in order to keep your job, then you should go somewhere else because the situation is going to be bad and get worse. There may not be many jobs out there and you may feel trapped, but if kissing up is the only way to get ahead, I think I would rather stay behind.

Ethically speaking, you would need to stand on your own two feet. If you are dependent on the boss to give you everything, then you will never really get ahead. There may be the appearance of getting ahead, but when you try to get another job based on what you do in your current job that you may not be qualified for, it will come out in the open and you may lose the opportunity. If you only take positions you are qualified for, when you move up, you will have a firm foundation to buil on.
