Building a simple web page

by Tim StS

This is a very simple step by step guide to building your own web page using HTML. Once you have the basics down, I will give you resources to use to learn more about what you just designed and how to change or improve upon it.

NOTE: I have substituted the brackets you will use for HTML (the ones above the comma and period on your keyboard) with { and }.

Here is how you can make your own web page using HTML:

1: Open Wordpad. It is a very simple text editor that can usually be found under accessories.

2: Type what you see in the brackets (inclucing brackets!) Next to the brackets is an explanation of what each tag means.

{HTML}- This tag signifies to the browser that the document is a web page.

{HEAD}- Anything in the HEAD tag loads first.

{TITLE} - Title of your web page. You see the title in the upper left corner of the browswer window, next to the browser logo.

{/TITLE}

{/HEAD} Notice the slash. This is how you signify something is done in HTML. The head tag should always be closed before the body starts.

{BODY} This is the part of the web page that people will actually see and use. Type a sentence in after the BODY tag and it will appear on your site.

{/BODY} Once you have entered all the info, close the body tag up.

{/HTML} Once everything is done, close the HTML tag.

THAT IS ALL! Save your document as index.htm - index is the page that will always load first off a server, and .htm tells your server that the document is in HTML.

Then, go to some of these sites so you can better understand what you just did, and how to improve it. Once you get the main tags shown above done, though, you can be satisfied knowing that you created a website. Have fun with it after that!

These are my favorite online tutorials. They are easy to use and understand and will help you get going on that site.

I also love The VISUAL QUICKSTART GUIDE called HTML FOR THE WORLD WIDE WEB put out by PEACHPIT PRESS. It costs about 20 dollars but is well worth it. I use it nearly every time I design or update a web page. Google Elizabeth Castro and the book will pop up.
