The subject of abortion revolves around freedom of choice. Some are for it while others are against it. It has been the subject of numerous debates and protests for quite some time. It will no doubt continue to be a controversial subject for years to come.
I believe a woman should have the right to choose abortion. What a woman does with her body is her choice. If a woman does not desire to bring a child into this world, she should have the option to terminate the pregnancy.
I am not saying that abortion is some fantastic option to have around. I have known plenty of women, including high school friends and family members, who have had the procedure performed on them. It was not a joyful experience for any of them.
I can understand those who oppose abortion and are pro-life. I think they have their points and are simply against taking life away from someone who cannot speak for his or her self. On some levels, I commend them.
However, I find myself arguing for the opposite side. As a woman, I would not want to be told that I do not have a choice in the matter of bearing children. I want to make my own decisions about my body and whether or not I want to bring a child into this world.
If a woman becomes pregnant due to rape, should she be forced to go through with the pregnancy? It scares me that some people think so. In most cases, not only does the woman suffer psychological and physical trauma, but also the child must deal with the disadvantages of being the product of a rape. Some mothers have hostility toward a child who reminds them of their attacker. Some distance themselves from the child to avoid any reminder of the assault. This, in turn, damages the child.
Many have said that abortions are simply an easy way out when a woman wants to act reckless and careless. I, myself, have been guilty of using that argument. Some will tell a woman to keep her legs closed and then she won't have to worry about the issue of abortion. The truth is; life does not always go the way we plan and surprises can and do pop up.
My parents were unmarried and still in high school when my mother discovered she was pregnant. Being raised in a catholic family, my mother and father were pushed into marriage by my grandparents. I was born a few months after the wedding. A short time later, my parents divorced.
My mother could have chosen abortion at the time, but she didn't. Over the years, she's terminated several pregnancies due to medical reasons or because she did not feel it was the best time to bring another child into this world. I don't know what made her choose which one of us to have and which not to, but my brother and two sisters are here with me and I would not trade them for the world.
If women lost the right to choose abortion, the world's population would be spilling over by now. In a way, abortion is one of things that contribute to population control, as sad as it is. It most certainly has its downside, though.
Some believe that abortion destroys life and that once a baby is conceived it is a person just like you and me. However, I believe that a fetus does not have conscience thought while in the womb, especially in the early stages of the pregnancy. Again, this is merely my opinion. I would not technically consider abortion to be murder. Only after birth do I believe a murder can be committed.
That being said, however, I've often wondered what my other brother and sisters would have been like if my mother had chosen to give birth to them. The reality is that she didn't, though. She chose abortion. I didn't completely agree with it each time, but it was her body and not mine. I have to respect that.

The main issue is whether or not abortion is murder. When does human life begin and at what point is it considered killing?
