How to increase your webpage ranking

Getting ranked well on the different search engines is an ongoing struggle for website owners. Not only do you have to work to give each search engine what it wants, you also have to be aware of the constant changes in what the search engines feel is important, as well as fighting off your competition for those coveted top spots.

For this article, I will be focusing mainly on Google, because it is the biggest of the popular search engines. Each site looks at different things, but if you do what it takes to rank well on Google, there is a good chance you will do pretty well on Yahoo and MSN as well.

Google determines where to list sites for a particular search term by running an algorithm that tells Google how your web page stacks up against other pages for that search term. It is believed that Google considers around 100 different elements when calculating that listing. While we don't know exactly what all of the elements are, or how important any one element is, there are some things that have been proven to be effective for getting a web page listed.

Off Page Elements.

The biggest off page element that a site owner needs to pay attention to is link building. Google uses a process called Page Rank that it uses to determine the quality and quantity of links to your page. Like in so many areas, Google doesn't share exactly how they calculate page rank. You should concentrate on building links from other pages with higher Page Rank, and links from pages that are relevant to your page.

A couple of ways to increase your pages links is to submit your site to all of the major search engines, directories, and social bookmark sites like Digg and Stumble Upon. It can be a time consuming process, so be patient and keep working at it. If you build quality links your Page Rank will increase.

On Page Elements

Another thing that Google looks at when calculating Page Rank is internal links within your site. Make sure you include links to other pages within your site. Again, linking pages that cover a similar topic will count for more.

You should also make sure you use your keyword phrases within your page. There is no set number of times you should include your keywords. My advice would be to use them early and often. You should also find ways to set your keywords apart from the rest of your content. By including them in header tags, using bold and italic fonts, and including them in bulleted lists, you are telling the search engines that those particular words are more important.
