Technology in today's classroom

Here at the end of the first decade of the 21st Century, the idea of NOT having technology in the classroom is inconceivable. All around us the world has become technology based. Few if any colleges in this country or abroad, function without some sort of computer based technology for record keeping, course management, communication, and actually teaching/learning. Working on the assumption that some of the children sitting in elementary and high schools in this country will one day sit in a college classroom, its easy to say, technology is something that needs to exist in some form or fashion in today's classroom.

I work in a "technology based" school. Basically, what this means is, there are at least 6 computers in every classroom, with a full computer lab for group assignments. All classrooms have projection units of some sort to be used by the teacher and the students to explore the lessons together, and to go out onto the Internet to research and learn.

Students are given opportunities to learn how to use this technology through the teaching of the basics of word processing, presentation design and spreadsheet design. We teach them to complete research by providing "scavenger hunts" and "web quests" for them to google something other than their best friend's name.

I personally use this technology to prepare the students for college. I have class websites that have all assignments posted and links to supplemental assignments and activities to help them to learn concepts available for them. We learn the APA style of report writing together by going to websites that have examples of how to write a report. We learn about our personal learning styles, some of which are perfect for this particular medium.

Technology in today's classroom can move beyond the computer also. In the science lab, we learn to use probes and read data collected with equipment most only find in college or industry. We create and explore using chemistry, robotics and/or engineering concepts while studying Newton and/or Avogadro. We LEARN using technology.

It is said that the classroom in America is still stuck in the 1950s with the methodology and styles of teaching being used. Yet, the world is zipping quickly forward, and won't wait for the schools to catch up. We have to move forward on our own; quickly and with great determination.

The education of our children depends on it.
