Why a skimpy bikini is socially acceptable and skimpy lingerie is frowned upon:
Bathing suits have changed over the years just as lingerie has and it seems we're down to the bare minimum, excuse the pun. They used to be one-piece suits with skirts, and lingerie looked like shorts and a t-shirt. Victoria's Secret fashion shows are now far from that. Their lingerie, as they'd love to tell you, is "sexy" and any young woman wearing said lingerie wants to feel sexy.
Bikinis are nearly identical, minus the lace; they are barely-strung-together pieces of fabric. The designers hope you will be distracted by the bright colors and not realize how revealing these suits really are. Not to mention the price is more than lingerie, if indeed you would like both pieces. The average this season was around $80. That seems steep considering these weren't exactly Dolce and Gabbana.
So why would the latter be accepted by the public? Because girls started wearing them. If the majority of girls at the beach or by the pool are wearing bikinis it can't be considered that disgraceful. You can't very well be offended by how one person is dressed if ten others are dressed the same way.
There were recently some complaints about VS's "sexy" line but those people can't expect the chain to be phased by the comments if their products are still selling. Name brands will only begin to care when their selling strategies have an obvious flaw than needs to be addressed. Victoria's Secret is not going to seriously change their clothesline until there is a substantial problem.
One difference is that no one is going to see your lingerie while a bikini keeps you on display, not leaving much to the imagination. The public does not seem extremely bothered by this yet.
Both lingerie and swimwear are necessary and it boils down to wanting to look good in whatever you're wearing. The full bodysuit wasn't very becoming, so over the years the standard suit was getting trimmed down more and more. And high-rise, taupe-colored granny panties were far from sexy, so that was altered quite a bit, as well. Soon the thong was created and hideous undergarments were a distant memory.
The times are changing, girls are wearing less, and you can't be stuck in the past, hoping time will reverse itself.
