Some people are excessively vain, placing an unhealthy emphasis on their looks alone. They often measure their success by the reflection that greets them in the mirror. Above all else, a satisfactory appearance is what makes them ultimately happy and they will indeed stretch to extreme measures to obtain it. Invasive cosmetic surgery, painful procedures and spending thousands of dollars are all worth the sacrifice if it would mean a more so pleasing countenance.
Then there are those at the other end of the spectrum who simply do not give their appearance much, if any, thought. Clothes shopping is a chore, not a pleasure, they never wear makeup unless coerced to do so by the occasion and perhaps they believe in saving money by cutting their own hair.
Most of us sit somewhere in the middle of these two extremes. We do indeed care about our appearance but we understand that there are most often other qualities that lead to self-esteem and success. We maybe can see the fragility of relying on our looks alone and thus concentrate on developing an all-rounded persona instead.
However, which ever category you currently belong to is irrelevant. There are certain events and circumstances that life throws at us which potentially make us stop caring about our appearance.
Perhaps the most potent of all these life situations is physical or mental illness. A once glamorous shopaholic can suddenly be plagued by a debilitating condition which renders attention to their looks futile, difficult or even impossible. The pain and anguish their illness afflicts them with reverts their mind from superficial concerns such as how they look and propels them into the throws of anxious woes about their health. Mental illness can seemingly switch off their desire to have a well- turned out appearance. We need look no further then Britney Spears to exemplify. Before rumors of mental impairment abounded she was one of the most beautiful women in the world, for her looks were flawless and she was admired as a world-wide sex-symbol. Since psychological issues began to destruct her life we have been privy to this rapid decline from a beauty into someone who dresses terribly, has cared so little about her appearance that she publicly shaves all of her hair off and who often ventures out without the guise of makeup exposing troubled, unsightly skin. I'm sure she would hardly believe a few years ago how illness and worldly woes could amass to cripple her looks.
Indeed many of us experience bouts
