Short stories: Rain

The summer dress of the young woman on the bus is soaked through by the sudden summer rain. It presses to her flesh like a lover, caressing and holding her body tightly in a humid embrace never wishing to let go, she is shivering slightly as the damp fabric takes away her body heat.

The floral print of her dress is almost transparent in places, the goosebumps of her skin clearly visible through the flimsy material. Her wet hair is flattened and a single twist drops down across her forehead and follows the contours of her nose, dropping against her lips and careering down to her chin. Absentmindedly she brushes it back behind her ear and looks out of the window searching for something only she is aware of. She has to rub the condensation away with the back of her hand as it seems all the occupants of the bus have managed to be suprised by the rain. The steam is rising from the collection of shoulders and collects on the glass, it creates small rivulets as gravity takes hold and leaves small, clear tracks down the buses windows.

She smiles to herself, deep in thought, perhaps she is thinking of a lover or maybe just remembering a drier and sunnier time. An elderly gentleman glances up and seeing her smile finds himself smiling back, a little hint of sunshine from that warm smile is contagious. He squeezes his wifes hand and looks at her, the smile still on his face. She stares deeply into his eyes wondering how he manages after all these years to look at her as if he has only just caught sight of her, a warm smile spreads across her face as the feeling of love blossoms within her and she tightens her grip on his hand knowing she will love him until her dying day.

The young woman stands up and presses the bell to stop the bus, she smoothes her dress down across her graceful body and makes her way to the front of the vehicle. The smile spreads like the dawning of the sun as she passes people until the whole bus has been touched, even the gruff driver smiles back as she stands near the door.

As the bus glides to a stop she lithely steps off and once again she is back into the rain, it falls onto her already wet body but she appears not to notice how it soaks into her dress. She lifts her face to the sky, her eyes closed and as the bus pulls away she is oblivious to the looks and smiles of the people she has left behind, the people she has touched.
The smile is still on her face, she loves the rain.
