Working in a family business

Working with family can be a challenging experience, one fraught with perils, but equally open to success and enhanced camaraderie among the other employees in the work force.

The most glaring problem associated with working within a family business is that problems from the business side can spill over into the personal lives of those involved and vice versa. Clear boundaries must be established to separate the two. A good rule of thumb to follow closely is never to discuss business matters at home, no matter what the temptation, and follow the same concerning personal matters at the office.

One temptation that must also be avoided is exploiting the family relationship for a better situation at work, (i.e. being allowed to leave before the work day has ended, better conditions and/or salary that those with complementary positions within the business). Unfair nepotism, or even the appearance of such, could very easily cause a backlash of discontent among fellow workers, damaging morale and, in extreme cases, seriously tarnishing the image of the company itself. For these reasons, all business matters between family must be seen to be completely above-board by the other employees. If anything, more stringent criteria should be applied. If a family member is abusing the working relationship, they must be informed of such abuse and disciplined, and, if that is not effective, should be let go without delay.

A potential asset to utilization of a family member within the company, especially if the member is a lower-level employee, is he/she may act as a go-between the base workers and upper-level management, staunching any burgeoning discontent within the company before it is allowed to fester or develop further. The liaison, though, must be careful to only bring up matters that are of true importance to worker satisfaction, as the potential for abuse is high. A liaison should not be a sounding board for every minor complaint that arises, but an earnest listener willing to see that any problems are dealt with quickly and efficiently. They must also inform these employees if they think an idea is not necessary or not fully reasoned. Otherwise, they risk the appearance of impotence regarding such matters, destroying the good will they have previously built up.

All in all, working within a family enterprise is a series of potentials, some positive and others negative, but if a good balance is maintained, both the personal relationship, as well as the business itself, will grow and expand to unrealized dimensions.
