electricity, history and carpentry. The hobby brought knowledge of the use of power tools as well as swinging a carpenters' hammer, blistered palms from screw drivers as well as to what types of nails and or screws to use.
Model railroading brought out the artist in me for landscapes. Building mountains then painting them the right colors to depict actual earth colors. Paint mixing came into play then. Eyeballing the correct texture for mountains and hills and painting "water".
Of course I cannot leave out the Athearn freight and passenger car kits that I built over the years. Or the scratch built structures from plastic and balsa wood I first drew on paper then brought to realism through trial and error!
Model railroading is not just a "toy". It is an educational tool with out limits! It is a private or public world which and child or an adult cam emerge themselves into for seconds to hours or days if one cares to do. It can take away stress, sadness, loneness by its existence in ones mind to teleport from one place to another of happier times. It can and in most cases does allow time to heal all wounds. As there is nothing better than to see your creation working the magic that you envisioned in your mind and brought to full animation. Your world as you would like it.
