How to make your own protein shakes

Protein in the diet may be increased for many reasons. During pregnancy, the need for protein is heightened. Weight builders consume elevated amounts of protein. Some people just prefer a diet high in protein and need a rapid way to consume their daily intake goal.

Protein shakes can be a boost to the diet, yet a drain on the pocketbook. It need not be this way! With some investment in time and raw ingredients, anyone can duplicate the benefits of the big brand canisters of protein powder

Basic protein shakes can easily be made from scratch at home. While protein is not financially inexpensive, this recipe will save you over the cost of a big brand powder. Protein drinks can be modified easily or just for a change of flavor. The following recipe provides an estimated 49 grams of protein per serving. The recipe makes two generous servings.

PROTEIN FORTIFIED MILK

2 eggs
1 Tbs vegetable oil
1/2 cup yogurt
2 cups low fat milk
1/4 cup nutritional yeast
1/2 cup soy flour
1/2 cup dry milk powder
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/4 cup orange juice concentrate
8 oz. crushed pineapple

2 cups low-fat milk

Combine all ingredients minus the second 2 cups of milk in a blender and process until well blended. Pour into pitcher and add remaining milk. Stir to incorporate. Re-stir if not drank immediately.

Nutritional yeast has a distinct flavor and you may need to increase the amount in your drink slowly over the course of days. Wheat germ can be added to the recipe to further boost protein, but will make it more chewy'. The pineapple can be switched with an equal amount of any fruit flavor of your choice.

Tofu is a versatile product that can be used as a base for protein shakes, too. The silken style is smooth and creamy when incorporated into a blender drink. The following recipe can be modified with different fruits, as well as frozen in an ice-cream maker. The following recipe makes 2 servings of smoothie with an estimated 31 grams of protein per serving.

TOFU PROTEIN SHAKE

1 cup vanilla yogurt
1 cup skim milk
2 bananas
6 ounce soft tofu
1 1/2 cup blueberries
2 cup strawberries

Combine all ingredients in blender. Process until smooth. To make ice cream, follow your ice cream maker's user directions.
