Public transport should not be free nor should it be expensive. Public transport should be so affordable that anyone and everyone can, and will, use it without a second thought. There should be a good network system of public transport making it easily accessible, safe and convenient for all to use at any time.
Everything has a value and when something is provided free a lot of people will not appreciate the significance of that which is provided to them when it as at no cost. Pay as you use is important in keeping in peoples mind the value of the service provided.
The employees of public transport should also feel of worth to the community not just providing a freebie service. This is quite significant when something is considered valuable there is a better appreciation and respect to keeping it running well and looking right.
Often that which is provided for free is over time downgraded and left to look shabby and significantly devalued in importance and worth. A service should run to a timetable, be the best that can be provided and be of benefit to as many people as possible.
If people can easily afford to use a service, then more people will use it and you will never run an empty bus, train or tram. An empty vehicle is a drain on the public purse, and adds to the pollution and congestion of our roads while providing little value.
When more people use public transport and are charged even a little cost, this small amount of money will add up to a considerable sum of money over time. This can be used to run the service, as well as keep it up to date with new and more efficient trains, trams and buses. The more the public transport system can generate finances toward running, maintenance and upgrade, the less financial drain it will be on the State purse. However, this cost to the public should not be prohibitive.
A small cost or perhaps a token cost for the use of public transport should be considered. For those that are financially disadvantaged there could be a discount card system for them to access that would give them more public transport savings.
If cities are to be pro active in environmental issues then providing very accessible public transport will alleviate the congestion of the number of cars on our roads and the associated pollution.
If you cater to the publics safety, comfort and protection a token fee for using the service will not be prohibitive. A service should also be efficient and reliable. However, if the service is unsafe, uncomfortable, insecure and unreliable the general public would not use it even if it is a free service.
