Eczema: Symptoms and treatment

and in severe cases oral corticosteroids. Antibiotics are sometimes needed if the skin becomes infected. The most important thing to do is to break the itch/scratch cycle. You itch so you scratch your skin, which causes it to itch more. This can make treating eczema extremely difficult.

You can try some unorthodox ways to stop the scratching. Try taping oven mitts on your hands before bed so you can't scratch at night in your sleep. Some women will get acrylic nails because they are usually too thick to scratch. Only do this if you know the acrylic won't aggravate the eczema more. Keep finger nails short so you can't scratch or break the skin. Take up knitting or some other task that keeps your hands constantly busy so you won't idly start scratching.

One major problem caused by eczema is insomnia. Sufferers can literally scratch all night long. During flare ups you can become exhausted by the restless nights. This can lead to depression if not treated. Antihistamines can help with the insomnia and in some cases the itch as well. If the antihistamines are not enough talk to your doctor. Your doctor can prescribe something stronger for the insomnia. Develop a dialogue with your doctor letting him/her know what problems you are having and what is or isn't working.

Environmental triggers can be hard to avoid. You can't stop the smog or the heat of the sun. You are not completely helpless though. You can avoid being around anyone who smokes. Many people are allergic to smoke. Try not to go out in the middle of the day when it is the hottest. Sweat can irritate your skin. Avoiding stress can be impossible, however you can change how you react to stress.

Eczema does not have to control your life. The itch can be controlled. By playing an active part in taking care of your skin you can claim your life back.
