Spring and summer bring severe seasonal allergies for millions of people. However, there is no need to stay inside to avoid the pollen in the air. Many natural remedies are available to ease the sniffling and sneezing.
There are several basic tips you can use to begin feeling relief. Make sure to keep the windows closed at home and in the car. Dust the house thoroughly, and make sure to wash sheets, blankets, comforters, and curtains which can all house dust mites. If you have soft items, such as plush toys, which cannot be washed, put them in the freezer for 48 hours - dust mites cannot survive the temperature. However, even with these guidelines, many people still find themselves suffering.
One all natural remedy that has recently been popularized is the Neti Pot. These small vessels have been used for thousands of years to clean out the sinuses. The pot is filled with a saltwater solution which is rinsed through the nostrils. It can take several doses before the results are noticeable, but the results are often dramatic. Neti Pots are available online and in natural food stores, and have started being stocked in traditional pharmacies.
Many natural herbs and extracts have been studied in conjunction with allergy relief, however results are inconclusive. One herbal extract, called Butterbur, has shown promise fighting seasonal allergy symptoms and does not cause drowsiness.
A simple solution for pollen problems is adding local raw honey to your diet. Honey acts as an immune system booster, desensitizing your body to the allergens. Check your local farmers market to see where the closest honey is produced. Try to find a generic "wildflower" honey instead of one that is from one particular flower, and take one tablespoon per day.
Other food solutions are being investigated. Deficiencies in different areas, such as Omega-3 fatty acids, seem to increase the severity of symptoms. Spicy foods, such as cayenne pepper, hot ginger, and even onion, can act as temporary decongestants. Eliminate foods that you have are sensitive to as well.
Another promising alternative approach to allergy relief can be found in acupuncture. The 5,000 year-old Chinese healing practice has been linked to a variety of health improvements, and allergies are no exception. It is suggested that the acupuncture treatments begin 2 to 4 weeks before the seasonal allergies typically appear.
There is no need to suffer from seasonal allergies. More natural remedies are being investigated daily. Give them a try, and breathe easy.
